COMPSCI PROJECT #2

ISSUES AND BELIEFS ABOUT COMPUTER
There are many misconceptions, myths and issues regarding computers. Here are some examples of them and the truth behind them:

FALSE
1. Restarting the computer will cause damage and/or wear it out.
2. The speed of a computer is determined by the System Resources
3. Computers don't need an anti-virus program because I'm using a firewall.
4. Using free anti-virus program means you don't need to buy another one.
5. Power strip is cheaper and is just as good as a surge protector.
6. Restarting the computer is the same as shutting it down completely then powering it back up.
7. Monitors wear out faster if you turn it off when not in use.
8. Expensive processor works faster.
9. You need a good video card to watch DVD's and edit images.

TRUTH
1.  Restarting the computer actually helps. As you use the computer, information is put in temp files as well  as  in a location known as the Swap file, where it can more easily be retrieved for use by the applications.

 2.  Low resources can cause a computer to run slower, but the speed of the system is not determined by the amount of System resources

3.AV software and firewall software are two different things, designed for different purposes. A firewall is designed to help prevent unauthorized entry into your computer from the internet. It is not designed to prevent virus infection, nor is it able to determine if there is a virus nor to remove one.

4. It costs even more to track the hundreds of new viruses that are produced each week and to put forth the research necessary to find a way to remove them.

5. A power strip is often much less expensive than a surge protector in initial cost, but they are not the same thing and don't do the same job.

6. Shutting a computer off completely powering it up again allows electrical current that is still in the wiring and boards to seep out.

7. The chances in powering down the monitor are that there will be many things that wear out a lot faster than the on/off switch.

8. Many people, when they’re looking for a system, will make a beeline straight to the Athlon 64 FX or the Pentium Extreme Edition.  They figure, faster is better.  Yes, faster can be better, but in reality it’s usually not cost-effective, and often people don’t need such a great processor.

9. For some cause, there’s a stigma against integrated graphics and low-end discrete cards.People get better cards because  they need them for everyday tasks like image editing and movie watching, but actually they don't, the only reason you need a good card is if you play games, render video or animation, or do CAD/CAM work.
